The work in this exhibit was inspired by a 2-week artist residency with the National Park Service, at the Oregon Caves (a monument and preserve in southern Oregon). The Oregon Caves are nestled in the Klamath Mountains ecoregion - one of the most biologically important forest regions in western North America.
The land in this region originally formed in the Pacific Ocean, over millennia, & eventually collided into the North American continent. Because of the area’s rugged terrain (the region has 4 different mountain ranges) & its difficulty to traverse, it still holds stunning old-growth forests & ancient lineages of plants & animals which are endemic to the area.
The watercolors on display pay homage to this beautiful and mysterious land: the beguiling switchback trails, the abundance of birdsong, the percussive drum of pileated woodpeckers, the brilliant glow of sword ferns in the forest understory.
This artist residency was funded in part by a Career Opportunity Grant via the Oregon Arts Commission.
Location: Lan Su Chinese Garden, the Scholar’s Study (239 NW Everett St, Portland, OR.). Date & Time: November-December 2025.
