Description: This class is a survey course, discussing the professional field of illustration. We’ll discuss different avenues of illustration, including: editorial illustration, fashion illustration, scientific illustration, surface design, advertising, and more. Students will be introduced to a variety of illustrators’ work, different tools, processes, and working methods. We’ll talk about quotes, invoicing, how to find work, and more. Students will leave each session with a new handout of resources (e.g. links, books, organizations) to learn more about each topic, and an optional homework assignment each week. We’ll develop critical thinking skills and learn the basic vocabulary for the world of design and illustration.
This class is great for someone who’s considering a career in illustration, but it’s also helpful for: illustrators who are already 1-5 years into their professional career, folks who want to dabble in illustration as a side hustle, and folks who are just interested in selling their artwork on cards and merchandise. Students are encouraged to have some background in drawing already, and access to drawing tools (primarily traditional materials, but digital tools are also welcome).
This class is open to Adults, and Youth ages 16+, and all levels of skill.
Max number of students: 15.
